Coma

He startled awake; taking in slow steady breaths as he gathered himself.
He is alive.
***
The smell of the room was unfamiliar to him, the colour of the walls seemed different and foreign. Some part of him knew that something was amiss, that the things around him shouldn't have felt so wrong. This realisation began to unnearve him. As his head cleared, a frightening thought surfaced.

He quickly quelled the suspicions, blaming the lucidity of his faculties. Yet, the physical state of his body indicated otherwise. He could literally feel the distrophy that had set in: the gentle stiffness that pervaded his frame, a slight numbness in the soles of his feet.

A potent rush of adrenaline had his brain working overtime, every neuron fired up and racing, racing towards it failure.Using every ounce of his consciousness, he tried suppress the single doubt that was rising up in the back of his mind, the single doubt that he knew would ruin him.
The rapid quickening of breath indicated the on-set of a panick attack but more importantly, that he has lost the war with himself.

He quietly sat upright, looking cautiously around the room where his gaze finally stopping to look at his hands.

"How long was I asleep?"
